Promoting FON
There are over 32,000 Foneros worldwide and more joining each day. All this with almost nothing spent on advertising. So, how do we continue to get the word out? I read an idea that at first I dismissed, but after thinking about it changed my mind. Marco suggested that FON provide chairs for people to sit in outside FON spots. This would be a really unique form of advertising like nothing I’ve seen. Imagine coming across a bright orange folding chair with the FON Movement logo on it. In many places this would be really out of place, thus draw a lot of attention. It’s not a conventional form of advertising, but FON’s not your typical movement.
Let me know your ideas and thoughts on promoting FON!

I Think the chairs would be a great idea! And can catch quite a lot of attention, for a relatively low price. But the idea needs to be taken not to lightly. The chairs would have to be foldable (as to store them more easy, and for the sending in transport!), quite robust (as they will be outside), probably lockable, etc.
Here's an idea...with 32K Foneros worldwide, why not leverage their current involvement with the Movement by creating a "Fonero of the Month" award for the hostsite (Bill or Linus) with the most Wifi hits. This would encourage existing Foneros to get the word out and be eligible for a prize each month. Obviously you would need to limit the number of times one could win to make the game fair. As for prizes, FON would giveaway handheld Wifi devices (PSP, digital cameras, mobiles, etc) to Foneros so they to could be on the lookout for the next FON hotspot to access the net with their new gadget.
I like the chairs idea.
And for the "Fonero of the month award" that will definitely be launched sometime this year (probably Q4). In fact, it's an idea that surfaced earlier in January on the French boards and then picked up by the French FON Team. The award will probably be called the "FonHero Award" (pronouneced FON-heero) and will be in the form of a cool WiFi gadget. More info soon...
Is it possible to set the Fon Network up in a Neighborhood with a high population density and charge people for fon access? Please e-mail me back your answer.
I like the chairs idea. I would be willing to put them outside of our business during open hours. We are located in a small town in the downtown area and this would attract a lot of attention. We are really excited about starting to offer wifi access through our business on the Fon Network. Keep up the good work!
Chairs are a really nice idea, unfortunately so nice that I think they would walk (with the aid of a human). Balloons on the other hand are very cheap, have flash mob (very distributed, needless to say) all over the world?
What about global brands that need to be seen to be doing something for the community, McDonalds springs to mind, super markets etc. etc.
