Fonera 2 vs the Competition; Asus, Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, NetGear, Planex

I've known for a while the Fonera 2 is packed with features other more expensive wifi routers don't have. It really didn't sink in until I saw the comparison below. The Fonera 2 will be released in Europe in April. All prices below are in Euros since U.S. pricing isn't official yet. I'll revisit this comparison, and convert to dollars, when the Fonera 2 is released in the U.S.

You could add a "white case with yellow print" and a "nice white antenna" line to the table and so add more green check-hooks for la fonera2. ;-)

In such comparison lines you shall only have general attributes to compare.
For instance this list misses lines of features Fonera2 doesn’t offer.
E.g. some (or most) of the competitors offer:
- Simple web page hosting from USB attached file space…
- Simple client list with IPs
- MAC blocking (blacklist)
- MAC client whitelist
- Full repeater mode
- 802.11n
And you see that FON adds lines for very special features which are clear that the others hardly can have it. To say it with an analogy: If you compare a BMW car with others it's clear that it's the only one which features a BMW logo on it.
Same here:
- Make money with your WiFi
- Free roaming
--> These are specific FON attributes
Where are the competitor’s specific attributes (which FON probably doesn’t meet)?
Further it makes no sense to only add only the uploader types FON supports.
To be fair you would have to add all uploader file service types existing to see if the other routers perhaps support others (which perhaps FON does not support).

Hmm… so for me it’s a quite blue-eyed table – would be nice to have it more objective.
Then perhaps such a benchmark wouldn’t only say how great FON is but additionally really show which features would have to be added in the next firmware releases to be more competitive.

Regards, Kyros

@Kyros - these "very special features" are exactly what we're so proud of. Not only can we offer all these additional features but we can do it for less money. Additionally the open plugin platform that sets us apart will help us offer even more features in the near future.

While I agree with Kyros in that the table is a bit biased towards Fon, it is still an amazing device at an incredibly low price, and I can't wait to get my hands on one. Especially looking forward towards the HSDPA feature. Great work, Fon.

I can't see how many Ethernet ports Fon haves. As for me, I need at least 1 WAN + 2 LAN ports. Does FON 2.0 provides them?

Also I can't see how much RAM, Flash and CPU power it does haves.

I'm going to go crazy for this (if it works).

How exactly is the Bittorrent feature going to work? Presumably it will save stuff you download to an attached USB drive?

The combination of USB storage + bittorrent + media server is an absolute winner.

WoW! Sounds Great!

But I wonder how it handles my 100Mbit full duplex Ethernet fiber Internet connection? (100/100)

I have a Linksys WRT54GL and that router can't handle more than 35MBit total.

Does Fonera have (handle) Gigabit Ethernet port(s)??

It would be great if it had atleast one Gigabit LAN port.

@t3st3r - 1 LAN and 1 WAN
I'll work on getting answers to the other questions too!

I'm also interested in the WANLAN Routing Performance... !!

Does fonera 2.0 firmware works on a linsys 350 n router ? Did anybody tried ?

# 10 | Sent by: Floreen – Friday, April 24, 2009 (07:42)

@Floreen - I haven't tried it on that model. You can ask others at Fonosfera.org !

On the buy page for fonera 2.0 i don't see a USB port at all.

# 12 | Sent by: joelee – Monday, May 25, 2009 (17:55)

if you click buy fonera 2.0 from the US, it goes to fonera+'s page. This will make ppl think you're buying 2.0 but instead you're buying the older model!!!!

# 13 | Sent by: joelee – Monday, May 25, 2009 (17:58)

@Joelee - sorry for the confusion. We hope to have the Fonera 2 for sale in the USA shortly!

@Steve
You said: Not only can we offer all these additional features but we can do it for less money.

- Then why don't you and the number of usb ports and the number of lan ports to the table?

# 15 | Sent by: Hasse – Monday, August 17, 2009 (21:44)

@Hasse - we'll consider all of these things for future versions. Thank you for the input!

# 16 | Sent by: Steve Ross – Tuesday, August 25, 2009 (01:12)

I look forward for the 802.11n version.
