if you offered this for free to major dense area (huge cities) i could easly see how fon would take over the city :). im always willing to beta test any fon product :), i live in nyc and i have major problems reaching anyone that wants to connect, even after i bought a 7dbi high gain antenna!

also do you think it would be possible to please allow us to choose the legal limit of wifi broadcasting power (1000mw, 30dBm), the fon only runs on 16dBm. little more then half of legal power?
from my understanding the chip on the current fon can reach 25 or so?

I can't wait to try your new antenna's they should add enough range to reach more people in my area!

If you want to further your commitment to open source, then in future at least provide a link to an open version of the video that doesn't require Plug-ins.

Going with a proprietary and highly insecure video format that doesn't run on all systems, and not offering an alternate like mpeg, is to say the least, closed minded.

Google and YouTube are bad enough with nothing but Flash links, don't follow their lead on this.

David - I really hadn't thought about it because the video worked fine on my install of Ubuntu with Firefox. I can't promise this in the future but I'll pass along your comments.

will the N version be for every one or will it be for more biz type people ?

Hi!

I think the price of "Omnidirectional Antenna" should decrease. The current la fonera antenna doesn't have enough range to share internet connection, only if someone comes to my house street.

D - The 802.11n should be for everyone, we'll see how fast laptop makers start including it. I know some, like Dell, already offer it.

Those routers look good, but have you considered a single person picking-up a 2.4GHz cordless OR a single microwave oven running will take out an entire wireless link in a VERY large area. Have you taken this in consideration of the range of these devices and why they aren't designed for long range, they are using unlicensed frequencies available for all types of purposes. Also I've recently read you've designed a Fonera 2.0 with bittorrent and usb support.. I've tried bittorrenting from a nas enclosure, several models actually, from ADSTech, Synology, QNAP, Planex, Allnet, etc... They all have about 64MB of ram to play with, non support protocol obusfication (encryption), thus will not connect to MANY trackers or connection to only very few peers. Was excruciating slow. Also, I've tried OpenWRT on a WRTSL54GS with a 266MHz CPU/8MB Flash/32 MB RAM.. running ctorrent caused wireless and network speed to slow to a crawl and nearly constant 100% cpu usage, so... running bittorrent on a router is not feasable at this time. 802.11N suck big time when it comes to range. It's very fast in your home but try receiving it outdoors, it's damn slow and speed drops off much quickly than my 802.11g Buffalos/linksys routers... btw, 802.11b gives the greatest range, and 802.11a gives the greatest line of sight transfers in the tests I've performed...

i need one of those! i live in a smal vilage in portugal!! ive been talking about FON with the mayor in the city hall! he said that it was a very nice idea to spread it to the rest of the comunity !! fortunately i dont have download limits (most of ISP's in portugal do) They thought in buy n amplificated wifi antenna!! i ve said they had lost their minds because if i shared my connection with all the village no one would have good speeds to surf the web! so ive invited to fon 3 friend's of mine that also have internet @home so we are almost all in the center if we have more powerful antennas maybe we can spread the signal to almost to all the vilage... are those available already on fonshop? are they pricy? im poor :) kidding.... but i am :D

I don't have official pricing yet so I'm wary of publishing anything. It's in our best interest to make them as affordable as possible and that's what we're working on. As soon as I have pricing I will post it on the blog.

So after Wi-Fi N, to get even further ranger then there will be a WiMax 802.16e Fonera? It'd be great if the little box could broadcast all of WiMax, WiFi N and normal WiFi G at the same time, to be compatible with everyone.

Will the WiFi N device broadcast at 300 meters if the receiving person only has WiFi G?

Hi Martin

I have a chain of 4 hairdressing salons in my local area. I have installed two Fonera. One of them would raise loads of money for you and me is it had the Fontenna. I know your are pushing out some units at the moment and I would like to get one ASAP, I don't mind paying but I think if it works I will add it to all of my salons.

Can I have one please?

Ta
Martyn
