One Laptop Per Child
If you haven’t heard about the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project today’s your day. The goal is to build a $100.00 laptop computer (with wifi) that can be used by children in developing nations. OLPC aims to outfit children with these because “Laptops are both a window and a tool: a window into the world and a tool with which to think. They are a wonderful way for all children to learn learning through independent interaction and exploration.” Pictures of the first working model have just been released. If you’ve seen earlier prototypes you’ll notice the hand crank (I was rather fond of it) has disappeared.

On your maps of countries where you have foneros.
Africa is not listed on the continents. Are u just assuming there is no wi-fi in Africa or u assume there never will be broadband in Africa.
THsoe assumptinsa re flawed as people with BROADBAND internet in africa exist? And if the comment is delted only proves me right.
Hi Kendall, I also noticed that Africa is missing. But I don't think that the reason for it not being on the map are because of the ones you have mentioned. The Fon initiative is attempting to foster a decentralised network, in order for that to happen, we need people from Africa to start buying them and starting off their own shared networks. There is no assumption that wi-fi doesn't exist. In my country (south africa) the problem is that of the Telkom monopoly, high costs, poor services. It will take a while before we in Africa can benefit from these initiatives, but I suggest that you start making people in your country aware of the benefits of the Fon Router. This is what I will be doing immediately. It can only get off the ground with some initiative. Perhaps if the people at Fon could clear up whether the Router is able to work in Africa as well? Or if Fon is able to provide an African Router?
"high costs, poor services", what makes you think the idea of $100 laptop will work? I may be on planet x but on a continent where there have been ZERO "people benefits" for the past 40 years, the laptop will only go to the few rich kids. And "we need people from Africa to start buying them and starting off their own shared networks", hello?
Yo beauty, you seem to be plagued by a colonialist mindset. May have to do with the fact that you are stuck in Nigeria and think everything and everyone is a scam. I suggest you try coming up with a constructive proposal instead of what you believe the problems are. Maybe the rich kids who want to buy the laptops only do so because ppl like you seem to want them to do it. How about some proposal on how these problems could be overcome, since you are the one who raised them. as for your comment on shared networks...no need to reply to that one. seems like you dont want to share...guess what, you become just like the rich ppl that you so despise...an arrogant...blah blah
