Solar Range Extender

Popular Science has a “how to” piece on building a solar powered wifi range extender. It’s a quick read and simple build utilizing the Linksys wifi range expander. I’ve found the range on my FON router exceeds the 300+ foot mark and extends well beyond my yard so range isn't an issue for me. I live on top of hill with relatively few obstructions so it gives me a bit of an advantage. If anyone needs this type of solution and is adventurous enough to try this let me know how it turns out!

I love this idea.

Hopefully some manufacturer (Linksys, Zyxel or other) will copy this idea.

The main problem, from my point-of-view is that it's impossible to deliver a perfect signal outside the building - especially in cold countries where the walls and windows are packed with insulation. I.e. the common window in Denmark would not allow the signal to go through. If it was possible to add a range expander on the outside of the wall, the signal will easily reach the outside area. Also, I would prefer solar energy because this means that I do not have to make a hole in my wall.
And then, the perfect solution will also require to survive snow and cold weather. It seems I'll have to take this solution down during the cold month.

Just dreaming,

So are you saying it is possible to use a range extender like the linksys to extend the range of the public fon signal? I have read elsewhere that one can extend the private but not public network. Would be very good if extenders worked, I could use an 802.11n extender to spread my fon network even further.

At this time no, but with the future firmware this is going to be possible.
