Free WiFi With Ads

Today if you are not a Fonero and you find a FON wifi signal you can view Skype, Google and Excite Japan for free because they are our investors. You can also pay 3 Euros or Dollars for 24 hours access, and 2 Euros or Dollars for any additional days. We are now experimenting with the possibility of ad driven access. The idea is that someone can watch a viral type ad and is then allowed to surf 30 minutes. If you want to surf longer, watch another ad. Of course you can still become a Linus and share a little bandwidth at home to roam the world for free with no commercials. You could also become an alien and pay for access without commercials.

Soon we’ll be deploying our flat panel Fontennas that extend the range of Fonera to about 200 meters / 600 feet. The rollout of the Fontennas will give us greater visibility and further drive the spread of FON! This may be a good time to try our ad experiment. We are still working out the details and would like your feedback. We intend to use the money from ads to subsidize our growth. We also need to figure out a model for sharing the ad revenue with our Bills and ISP’s. Any ideas and feedback you have would be greatly appreciated!

Please please don't use ads. My concern: with ads comes accountability (to the ad makers). It affects your ability to do what you want with the company. Stay away from that kind of deal, keep your independence.

Hello,
This is a brilliant idea it would bring funds in for FON and also give the company more money to mess around with and invest in other things.

I dont know what others think, but I think it is a really cool and sweet idea.

I think the adds are a great way to grow fon. Alot of people mind paying the 3 dollars and this way fon can take in revenue from those people who would not pay. The problem that may arise is people who would pay the 3 dollars and only needed internet for a 1/2 hour instead watch an add which may give fon less of a revenue. Never the less I think more people will now use fon more if they are aliens and the revenue gotten by using the adds will outweigh the revenue lost by people watching the adds instead of paying the $3.

I would also like to see FON resolve the issue of when aliens purchase a credit at one bills AP then moves to another Bill's AP in the same day the 2nd bill does not receive any compensation.

In regard to the Fontenna I cant wait, how much will it cost? Will there be some sort of discount for Linus and Bills who have kept thei router up 100% and have many foneros using it?

Anyhow keep up the good work FON

Hi Greg, I don't have official pricing but I've heard we're aiming for around the $20.00 mark. Again that is not the official price.

Will the people who surf for free with the help of ads have to register too?

The beauty was that you knew that every alien or linus or bill connecting thru ones fonera was registerd and would not be out there to cause problems.

With the ads how can I as a linus be sure my fonera is not used to do bad things?

Ad supported is just fine as long as there is somekind of proof of identity.

I don't have a problem with ads, per se. What I do have a problem with is the content and style of certain ads. Sometimes they are so bright and animated that they give me an instant headache. Or they sell scams (i.e. credit card offers). By outsourcing ad content, you have little control over what is presented. But there are things that can be done, from FONs point of view: restrict the technical aspects of some images uploaded, such as not allowing animated GIFs that you haven't checked.

I don't think we need any additional testers at this time but I'll post here if we do.

I'm interested in this concept. I run the technology at a nearby resturant lounge, we currently run free wifi for our customers which is fine, we want our customers to have a 100% free wifi choice. On the other hand if there was a way to have ad supported free wifi and the opportunity to make a dollar or two for premium access I'm not against the idea. I'd like to see how this pans out.
