Adios Microsoft!
Today I upgraded to Ubuntu. While my daughter napped I downloaded version 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" and burned it to CD. I was nervous but I put the CD in and rebooted. I chose the default installation that automatically partitions the drive and keeps Windows available should you want to return to it. The partitioning took some time and I have to admit I was getting nervous. After about 15 minutes the partitioner still showed as "0% complete". Suddenly it spiked to 100% and guided me through the rest of the installation. It only took a few minutes more and I was up an running. Ubuntu imported most of my pictures, music, and documents from Windows. There were some oddly named folders it missed. This was not problem as I was able to easily retrieve them when the setup was complete. I haven't reinstalled everything I normally use but all the major applications "just worked" after upgrading. I know this sounds like an advertisement for Ubuntu, I guess it is. I'll continue using it and report back on my progress.

Benoit - I built my pc myself so it's not a brand name. I use an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor and XFX GeForce4 TI4200 video card. I'm running 1.5mb ram. Not cutting edge but it runs well and does everything I need.
Hi Steve. Congratulations for the successful installation. I am using Ubuntu on my laptop as the only system. It works fine for me, however, there are some things I had to "give up". I am very interested in your future experiences - please keep posting. My wife has been using Ubuntu for some time now. It is not a problem at all, as she is not a very complicated user, just surfing web, using skype and email client. No problem at all. The same with my mother in law - I installed Ubuntu on her computer (hehe...) and showed her how to use it. She had no problems since then - but again, she only surfs the web.
Good luck with your new system.
Michal
Silly question really but would this system run on an Intel Mac Computer? And if you think it's possible, how would I do this?
Hi Gilbert, if you go to www.ubuntu.com the site states it is available for Mac. I know very little about Mac's though so I can't be of much help. Actually my laptop just "retired" about two weeks ago...maybe I should look into a Mac?
Ubuntu is just a debian port, and debian has lots of security issues. though ubuntu is kept up-2-date and debian is not. Ubuntu is flavor of linux for the /\/()()|3, some one with not so much XP in *nix.
If your up to the challenge, and want a more secure OS, that yes you can install KDE, or Gnome on, try out FreeBSD, or Fedora. if you want soem good graphics options and would like to stick with Ubuntu, try to port XGL into your kernel.
you can find videos of XGL on google. It makes Vista look like crap.
anyways, enjoy your New install of Ubuntu. My favorite version is "hoary hedgehog" for Ubuntu, and Debian Sarge ( net install ) for Debain.
