Two SSID's - just what you asked for!

A number of users suggested FON enhance the firmware to allow two SSID’s. Well it’s happening in the third release due in about 45 days. The router will now have two completely separate environments; one private, one public. Please keep the suggestions coming!

Is it possible to have the two SSIDs support different types of encryption?

Is this being done through OpenWRT? Out of interest is this development being fed back into OpenWRT?

Perfect. Finally, my browser-less deives (Xbox 360 et al) will work. Thanks a lot, that was the most important feature update I wanted.

will the division into two ssids keep the traffic separate as well? or will traffic from either ssid be snoop-able?

With WDS and an Airport Express Unit you can already have a private and a public network. Still, I'm looking forward to this feature. Don't want to have to switch on my APX all the time.

keep up the good work, brainslayer.

greg: fon no longer provides "fonadvanced" which was based on a 2005 edition of dd-wrt and is only developing it's customized firmware based on openwrt now. also, brainslayer has not provided a fon-ready dd-wrt firmware for several months. though both parties implied that they could collaborate again in the future, it is now apparent that fon has severed ties with brainslayer.

I was just wanting this when I checked the blog and saw that it was in progress! Great!

My FON AP just went up today, and I'm currently using an old Apple AirPort Graphite AP for my home network. Problems: its age means 802.11b and 40-bit WEP only. I'd love to make my FON router my primary, with an open, FON-style net and a closed, encrypted, non-FON net.

Here's to the dream!

Can I use WPA with the private SSID?

I hope this is coming out soon now. 45 days has passed ;-)

I'm hoping for this soon too... it's the only thing keeping me from putting FON up in my house (in a densely populated neighborhood :) )

I need to be able to get to the machines that are ethernetted in from my laptop, but I still want to keep everyone else out of them.

Well this will certainly solve an issue I have.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

Hi

it will be great to have an option to reduce wifi speed (11Mb)on wifi interface.
I am leaving in France/Paris and most of the wifi channel are busy .
In the wifi FON configuration there are already an AUTO option to select channel but reduce speed at 11Mb for example will increase range and reduce Disturbance on adjacent channel

Talked to the swedish representants for fon a couple of days ago. They told me there will be no firmware update in the nearest future. They never told me why, though?! To me this is mayor issue and I cant wait to install an update with double ssid.
