Ubuntu and Mac Update

Thanks to everyone who's taken an interest and helped out in breaking my Microsoft addiction.

Ubuntu: Everything is working great. No crashes, no issues. The only compatibility issues I've found are my printer and webcam. The printer is an antique so I'm not surprised. I still haven't spent more then 5 minutes working on the webcam, so I’m not writing that off as a failure yet. My family is using Ubuntu on a regular basis and like it, I will recommend it to others.

Mac: I installed neooffice yesterday. So far it's great. I'll use it for a few more days to insure I don't have any issues. Once I'm comfortable with it I'll delete MS Office and donate to neooffice. I really like the Mac. My only complaint is that it's finicky with encrypted wifi, once connected it's fine. I found a theft recovery program called undercover and thought it looked interesting. Anyone used it or something similar?

Microsoft: It's not completely gone from my life yet, my wife still runs XP on her laptop and I have XP available as a boot option on the family PC. I've been using non-Microsoft products for a few weeks now and the world didn't stop turning.

Hi Steve,

Once you're ready to have a go at the webcam, if it doesn't work for you after a little while, try installing EasyCam: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EasyCam

That worked for me. However, there are some webcams which are not supported by Linux yet.

It's very nice to hear your stories.

Hi.
As for your printer I recommend buying a HP printer.
HP has done a lot concerning open source software and driver development.
Another good source for which printer or all-in-one-device is www.linuxprinting.org
So make sure you check there before you go out and get a new printer. :-)

Have fun with Ubuntu and your MAC.

Just came across an alternative word processor for OS X, Bean (http://http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html) which might be worth a look.

Congratulations on making the change.

Steve--it *appears* that the wi-fi encryption issue is with older encryption schemes (say, 64-bit). Thus, the Mac is expecting something stronger, and won't "dumb down" as the drivers are newer. I'm willing to bet that you are talking about an older (4+ years) Linksys or Netgear wireless router.

Thanks for the Ubuntu update. I'm going to load it on an old G4 tower at work and play with that a while.

Okay, next question: how many active FON spots are there in the USA? How can we Foneros help you get more online?--Mike

Mike- there are about 12,000 FON spots in the USA. I think La Fonera 1.5 (with a LAN port) will be a huge help in growing that number. Most people I know have a desktop PC as well as a laptop so they couldn't use the current version of La Fonera without purchasing additional hardware. With this limitation gone I know a lot more people can join FON. I think telling people about FON is the best way I know to help us grow!

Undercover, for the Mac, I have it installed and well... I have no freaking clue if its actually doing any thing. I think its working. However if you want something you can control a little more check out http://www.zdziarski.com/projects/maclojack/ its perl and does basically what I wanted. Plus you can test if its working which I like. Undercover has no method for me to test except to report the laptop stolen it seems. Now with a little reworking I bet you could even get maclojack to do some of the basics under Ubuntu even..

For those who want to test Ubuntu without much effort, I found a nice freeware application called Wubi, that lets you install and run Ubuntu on your Windows machine without creating a boot CD or partitioning your hard drive.

95% of the world computer run windows it a very bad plan to not cover windows.. only 80% of my hardware runs work in linux. wireless network car does not work in linux.

its good for people not to use windows to save money and not all be on the same os. but windows has 95% of the users.
