Ubuntu Day Two

Ok, it’s day three for those counting. I did the installation on Sunday but not much else so I’ll call today day two. Also, “Ubuntu Day Two” sounds cool so I couldn’t resist.

I had some “stupid user” issues yesterday but solved them this morning. Whenever I tried to install new software packages I would get an error about Sudo permissions. I assumed I could just give myself root access and fix it but I didn’t want to do that. I really wanted to solve the issue the way someone with no Linux experience would so I continued working through the desktop GUI. I wanted to find the issue so I could report it to the Ubuntu team and help improve the product. Well, no issues to report, it was me. I created more then one profile when setting up Ubuntu and only the first had administrator access. I corrected this and installed all necessary updates.

I’ve had no trouble connecting anything via USB. I’ve got a back up hard drive, wireless (Microsoft brand) keyboard and mouse, and card reader all working with no effort. Ubuntu handled the installation and everything just worked! I’ll try getting my other peripherals connected today.

Steve, your (and FON's) switch is timely, as I'm hopin to switch the office over to Linux...once I find a good accounting package. Please keep sharing your experiences!

Meanwhile, the new LaFonera is easier to use, and appears to work better, than the Linksys it replaced...kudos :)

What about iPods/iTunes ??

Roberto - I don't use an iPod or iTunes so I can't say. I will ask others and give an update when I have some information.

Mike - will do. I'll let you know if I hear of a good accounting package.

iTunes itself won't run on Linux (thank gods) but an older version maybe could run with the help of Wine, if you wanted to. Better to try Amarok which is a **fantastic** music player and can transfer to an iPod; there is other software/players which can do this as well (Songbird, maybe?).

However, due to the silly way which Apple locks down their iPod (by scrambling up your music inside) I was much happier once I installed Rockbox on my iPod -- simple drag-and-drop adding of music, without needing any specific program to do so.

A few ideas on Accounting softwares:
KMyMoney http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/index-home.html
GnuCash http://www.gnucash.org/

Not ever used either myself, so I have no opinion. This may be one place where Wine and Quicken are considered for use, as I have read that the Crossover team uses Quicken with Wine (but I am not positive on that...)

Good luck on your learning. Check out KDE sometime, its waaay more fun than Gnome :)

Mike - try GnuCash for accounting. It is VERY popular and mature...

"What about iPods/iTunes ??"
Roberto, you can try GtkPod, or Amarok with iPod plugin.
I see one problem with those two. Firmware actualisation don't work.

Amorok is a very good choice for Linux/I-Pod interface.

To look at some simple how-too advice try this page. It save a lot of headache
