Web 2.0 and the Social Router

I’ve had some questions about the definition of “web 2.0”. Wikipedia defines web 2.0 as “a second generation of services available on the world wide web that lets people collaborate and share information online. In contrast to the first generation, Web 2.0 gives users an experience closer to desktop applications than the traditional static Web pages.”

That’s a start. I would add that web 2.0 companies separate themselves from their predecessors by their ability to grow with little advertising. Remember Pets.com and the little sock puppet they spent millions of dollars advertising? Well, I never used Pets.com, and neither did many of you. Pets.com was web 1.0.

Skype is web 2.0. I don’t recall seeing any advertisements for Skpe, they may have some. I use Skype because they offer a service I desire, as opposed to something widely available. FON is web 2.0 in the same way. FON offers me free wifi access, so I use it. FON is also social. It allows me put my photos, websites, and thoughts on my FON router so anyone connecting will see them. FON makes the world a little smaller. That’s web 2.0.

That's a neat concept, and a difference in marketing I hadn't thought about yet.

(luckily around here we did not get that Puppy ad!) :D

I agree to a certain point. However, much like web 1.0 (I hate those terms), a big bust is probably coming.

There are many companies building flavour variations of something that already exists, or something that's pretty much near useless to the average person. The whole point for, in particular, pointless apps (Flock comes to mind) would seem to be the hope that a big player will buy them and the owners can become instantly rich.

Don't get me wrong, the new proliferation of social web apps is great, but with plenty of flotsam.

Web 2.0 is a dumb buzzword, only used by people who have nothing real to show for but need to hype themselves.
Skype isn't Web 2.0 at all, they're not even about the web. Neither is Fon. The fact that you associate that with Web 2.0 just proves that it's a dumb buzzword that everyone associates with something else, most likely his own thing, because he thinks he can ride the hype wave that way...

Tom Foremski at Silicon Valley Watcher recently posted an interesting article about the phrase "Web 2.0".

It basically says that O'Reilly has applied for a trademark for the phrase "Web 2.0".

Actually, O'Reilly has marketed the phrase "Web 2.0" in reference to conferences on the subject i.e. they are the only ones legally entitled to hold a conference named Web 2.0 . The folks over at www.ajaxian.com had a little bit of an issue because they were in the process of organising a conference ... using Web 2.0 in the title.

Web 2.0, as far as it is technically concerned, is the innovative use of Javascript and the XMLhttpRequest function in order to bring new functionality into web applications. Or was that AJAX? It is a bit of a buzzword, but I don't think either Skype nor Fon technically qualify as Web 2.0 . Perhaps they both have this feeling of 'social interaction' and 'free for all', but I for one don't know what the criteria for a "Web 2.0" something or other is. Otherwise, pubs and taverns are the oldest "Web 2.0" services yet :) .

I have ordered, and received a Fon WIFI Hotspot device. It works. Thank you.

I was promised some Skype credits. But I have not seen them yet.

When do I get them? You have my money already.

Happy fonero
