The Fonero Promise to schools, non-profit organizations and NGOs
FON isn't just a company with big name investors like leading Internet companies Skype and Google. FON is also a social movement to spread the benefits of information technology to all parts of the world.
In recognition of the valuable role they play in society, FON Hong Kong is proud to announce The Fonero Promise for schools, non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations based in Hong Kong.
What is The Fonero Promise ?
FON's promise is to give you La Fonera for free!La Fonera is a WiFi router for the FON Community. La Fonera sends out two WiFi signals: one is for your personal use, and the other lets you share your broadband at home with other members of the FON Community (the Foneros). This means that by sharing a little bit of your Internet connection at home, you can enjoy free Internet access at all other FON Access Points anywhere in the world.
Your promise is that you will activate your La Fonera and share part of your Internet connection at home with other Foneros.
In the event you are unable to keep your promise, please give your La Fonera WiFi router to a neighbour or friend so that they can start sharing their Internet connection and join the FON Community.
We invite the appropriate persons from educational institutions, non-profit and non-governmental organizations in Hong Kong to contact us at hongkong@fon.com.

參加世界電信展 (ITU)，索取免費 FON 路由器
相信經常流覽本站的朋友可能注意到，每3年一度的國際電信聯盟(ITU)「2006年世界電信展」將在12月4至8日，在香港舉行．這個被譽為「電訊界奧林匹克」的盛事，首次在瑞士日內瓦以外地方舉行，亦是香港有史以來最大型的商業展覽．
這個展覽是全球電訊業最重要的活動之一，世界各地公私營機構的業界精英和專家、國家元首、部長、監管機構主管人員及跨國公司的行政總裁，均會參與這項盛事。FON很榮幸能成為中國香港館的其中一個參展單位．

Readers of our blog may be aware that from December 4-8 2006, ITU will hold its first ever ITU Telecom World event outside of Geneva, in Hong Kong. This event will bring together the world's leading Information and Communication Technologies and decision makers.
This is the biggest telecom event in the world and boasts an exhibition, a high-level forum, and countless opportunities for meeting and networking. FON is proud to be exhibiting in the Hong Kong/China Pavilion.
We are going to offer La Fonera via the Fonero promise to visitors at our booth at ITU which is located at Booth 8019.010 Hong Kong/China Pavilion Hall 8 Asiaworld-Expo Hong Kong
What is the Fonero Promise ?
FON's promise is to give you La Fonera, without any cost!La Fonera is a WiFi router for the FON Community. A Bill with a Social Agenda
Readers of this blog will know that the FON community is comprised of 3 types of people
- Linus: Those who share WiFi and in return can access WiFi at any worldwide FON Access Point
- Bill: They seek to make money from their Access Point and in return forgo the ability to roam for free Hong Kong is well know for its entrepreneurs and we hope that lots of Bills will emerge from the fledgling FON community.
- Aliens: People who do not share their wifi. They can access wifi via a FON Access Point for US$3/€3. Bills earn 50% of the revenue generated by Aliens
We @ FON Hong Kong are very pleased to hear about the innovative use of La Fonera by the SPCA. They have set up FON Hotspots in their centres and are providing wifi access to animal lovers in Hong Kong.
They have also chosen to be a Bill and are planning to utilize the revenue they receive via their FON Hotspot to support their charter for animal welfare.
We wish all success to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in this endeavor.

FON Software version 0.7.1.1 Released
Greetings fellow Hong Kong Foneros. We @ FON have recently released FON Software version 0.7.1.1 for the La Fonera. Your La Fonera routers will auto-update to this version in a few days.
We have come across reports from some Foneros who pressed the reset button. This might have reset the FON Software revision to 0.7.0.4, which seems to be causing some problems to Foneros, particularly those with PPPoE connection.
For those Foneros who are having problems connecting via PPPoE and are using FON Software version 0.7.0.4, here's the link to the software image for 0.7.1.1. Reflashing with this image may take a while (up to 10 minutes), but your new baseline FON Software version should you press the reset button will be 0.7.1.1.
You can reach the FON Software upgrade page on your La Fonera by connecting to the private SSID via WiFi and then going to the router config page at http://192.168.10.1/. Click on the 'Advanced' button on the left hand side and then on the 'Firmware upgrade' link.
You can also reach the router configuration page via wired interface.
Here's the changelog for version 0.7.1.1.

Configuring La Fonera via wired interface
Whilst most fonero's generally configure the La Fonera via the private ssid, it is possible to configure the La Fonera via the wired interface (the RJ-45 jack on the back of the La Fonera). Mostly one would use this method incase you are not able to connect to the private ssid (your OS/wifi adapter doesn't support the default encryption of WPA/WPA2)
Steps to be taken are as follows
On your computer set the following static IP/netmask
static IP: 169.254.255.2
netmask 255.255.0.0
Connect the included ethernet cable from the computers RJ-45 jack to the La Fonera's RJ-45 jack
Via your browser go to the following URL
http://169.254.255.1/
Voila, you are know at the router configuration page. Change settings as desired and enjoy the La Fonera.
Please note that the default username/password for the router configuration page is
username: admin
password : admin

Microsoft Updates
Greetings, fellow foneras. Most of you are aware that the La Fonera
supports WPA/WPA2 encryption for the private ssid alongwith WEP also. In
fact, WPA/WPA2 encryption is the default. We've had a few users tell us
that whilst they could use WPA encryption from their Windows XP devices
they couldn't get WPA2 working.
In general, the use of WPA2 needs firmware or driver support of both
devices, the wireless host (router or access point) and the wireless
client (adapter).
For Windows XP SP2, support of WPA2 requires that users download/install
this update (if you are using Windows Zero Config client utility)

You are also advised to have updated drivers for your wireless adapter.

全球WiFi社群FON進軍香港
透過革命性的寬頻共用服務提供免費網絡漫遊服務
香港，2006年11月1日：西班牙公司FON是全球最大及發展最快的WiFi社群。今天FON宣佈與Outblaze合作推出FON香港服務。透過FON社群，用戶可以與其他人分享自己的網路連線，以換取在全球各地的FON熱點免費享用WiFi服務。
有意成為FON用戶（Fonero）者需要使用寬頻上網，並在FON網頁免費登記成為用戶，然後購買價格廉宜的最新無線路由器La Fonera。現時La Fonera更以推廣價港幣39元發售，推廣期後將以零售價港幣(建議)250元出售。資深用戶可選擇使用既有的相容無線路由器，但必需下載特別FON韌體。
La Fonera是一個小型的高速IEEE 802.11 b/g路由器，可以單獨使用，或作額外路由器使用。其雙通道能力可以為Fonero在鄰近地區提供額外頻寬，同時為私人用戶提供安全的網絡系統。
Fonero享受以下多種好處：擁有一個適用於所有支援WiFi的電子產品及工具，包括手提電腦、手提遊戲機、立體揚聲器等的安全家居無線網絡,也擁有一個與其他Foneros分享的FON熱點，讓你可以在全球FON熱點免費享用WiFi服務。現時全球市區已有超過十萬個FON熱點。

FON簡介
FON於2005年在西班牙成立，是全球首個以社群為本的WiFi網路，覆蓋145個國家。FON用戶（Foneros）透過分享家居網絡連結，以換取在其他FON接入點享用免費WiFi服務。FON成員可分為三類：Linuses、Bills、Aliens。
