好消息，好消息
經過三年努力經營，經歷金融海嘯，行業中嚴峻的競爭，FON在2009第四季度將達到第一個收入盈餘的季度。對於一間只營運了短短3年的公司來說實在得來不易。實在要多謝全球各地Foneros對Fon wi-fi community的支持及Fon全球團隊3年來的經營。詳情可以按此閱讀由Fon首席行政總裁Martin的發言。

東九龍電腦節 - 數碼生活大匯演
由香港電腦商會主辦，MegaBox全力支持的香港電腦通訊節第一擊「東九龍電腦節 – 數碼生活大匯演」將於2009年4月2至13日，假MegaBox九龍灣宏照道38號隆重舉行。

甚麼是Walkamap?
Walkamap 是一個讓用戶互相交流的平台,他們可利用 iPhone 上網,
隨時隨地找到自己附近的商戶資料,同時亦可把自己的評價上載到
Walkamap 這平台上,供其他用戶瀏覽. 他們亦可參照社群及朋友之間
互傳的意見及口碑, 作為選擇時的參考.
我沒有iPhone怎辦?
對於沒有iPhone的用戶, Walkamap 亦可在一般電腦上應用得到.
例如 Walkamap 正在開發一個 Facebook 插件, 讓用戶可透過 Walkamap
平台隨時更新自已的所見所聞後,再自動分享給 Facebook 上的朋友知道.

狂賀! FON 與 Panasonic 合作首推 Skype WiFi 電話!
當你連接 FON 便能免費登入並進行直接對話！
FON 日本團隊已跟 Panasonic Communications 合作，一起研發一套適用於 FON 及 Panasonic Communications 推出的 SkypeTM WiFi 電話的軟件。 現在 Panasonic 的設備均能使用 FON 的熱點，容許用家免費在家或出外時使用電話。
這套裝置會跟無線網絡路由器一起發售，用家只要在家或其他地方設置路由器，便能讓用家公幹時使用 Skype。非常感謝 FON 的特別軟件，除了室外，這套 Panasonic WiFi 電話更讓用家經由 32,000 多個 FON 日本熱點免費連接互聯網，當中包括了 Skype-to-Skype 通訊。另外，此 Panasonic 套裝已符合美國、加拿大、英國、德國及法國的使用規格。
用家只需加入 FON 並作簡單的註冊程序，便能在 FON 熱點使用 WiFi 套裝。首次使用 FON 熱點後，你的帳號將會被 WiFi 電話所記下，日後的連接便不再需要輸入帳號和密碼。除此之外，Panasonic 電話安裝了自動登入模式，當它偵測到 FON 訊號時，便會自動登入並連接上 FON 網路。

免費 Livedoor WiFi 熱點在日本!
FON 日本團隊與 Livedoor 合作擴展 WiFi 全面覆蓋東京！
FON 日本團隊與日本網絡供應商 Livedoor Co., Ltd., 合作，
宣佈所有 Livedoor 的無線網絡熱點將與 FON 相容，
即是說 FON 用家可在 Livedoor 的熱點免費無線上網了！
FON 於日本東京的住宅區內已提供 3,1000 多個 FON 熱點，
是各家用公眾無線網絡中覆蓋範圍最大的 WiFi 網絡。
加上 Livedoor 在東京區內已有約 2,200 無線網絡熱點，
80% 熱點更出現在東京其中最繁忙及主要路線之一的 Yamanote。
透過這次合作，FON 用家可透過 FON_livedoor 訊號無線上網，
而位於東京市中心 Yamanote 沿線地區及商業區內激增了的 FON 熱點數量，
讓 FON 用家隨時 WiFi 上網。
FON_livedoor 將會免費開放給 FON 會員至 2008年8月4日，
限期後雙方會再計畫日後合作細節，首先約有 100 個 FON_livedoor 熱點開始投入服務，
並於 2月11日全數 2200 個熱點發放 FON_livedoor 訊號，
而且有關 Livedoor 的資訊均可在所有 FON 熱點檢視呢！
這次與 Livedoor 合作，FON 除增加了熱點數量外，更改善了用家體驗。
而 Livedoor 亦為自己的網站帶來更多的人流。
日後雙方更會考慮其他有關的合作機會，例如 Livedoor 用家亦可透過 FON 熱點上網。
小型 WiFi 產品的普及令無線網絡的需求增加，
FON 和 Livedoor 合作目的，是為用家提供隨處可用的無線網絡並建立一個新的 WiFi 文化。
FON 日本團隊會繼續努力尋求相似的合作機會，讓用家享受 WiFi 的樂趣。
為慶祝這次的合作，FON 會在2月4日至4月4日內增設「免費登入活動」，
於活動期間，所有 FON 會員 (包括沒有利用 FON router 分享網絡的 Alien) 均可免費登入所有 FON 熱點，

Foneros 的新居 - 瑞士日內瓦
位於瑞士的日內瓦和 FON 經已正式公佈合作策劃提供無線網絡服務予城市居民及遊客，
從下星期開始，500 個 La Fonera WiFi Routers 將會分發到家中擁有寛頻並於 http://geneve-fon.org 註冊的當地居民手上。
當地居民如欲成為 FON 會員並願意與 FON 社群分享他們的頻寛的話，
便能於全球超過 250,000 個 FON 熱點免費享用無線上網。
當這 500 個 La Fonera 安裝後，
日內瓦的市民及所有親臨這個城市的 FON 會員便能享用無線網絡了。
這個計畫是 FON 策劃提供無線網絡予全球主要城市之一，如東京、三藩市和慕尼黑。
這次的起步與馬德里的 ChuecaWiFi、FON 在英國與 BT 合作及在法國的 Neuf Cegetel，
為 FON 會員帶來更多 FON 熱點，更為非會員帶來更多理由加入 FON 社群。

Apple Fonera?
這是 FON 創辦人 Martin Varsavsky 與 Apple 的 Steve Jobs 會面的經歷
當 Martin Varsavsky 訴說他對 MAC 和其他 Apple 產品的著迷程度後，
很多讀者建議他應與 Steve Jobs 見面並介紹 FON ，
而他近來到美國三藩市時，便實行了讀者們的建議。
FON 美國的 Chief Fonero 及美國 Advisory Board 的主席 -
Joanna Rees 跟 Steve 在電郵裡提及 Martin 將會到三藩市，
並希望向他介紹 FON，Steve 很快答應並即時安排會議事宜。
會面後，Martin 才知道原來 Apple 已經對 FON 有很深入的了解。
「這個會議在位於 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino 的 Apple 總公司進行，
我很喜歡 Infinite Loop 的設計，
雖然 Apple 的辦公室沒有比 Google 的好，但是非常細緻和有活力。
Google 的是色彩繽紛的，而 Apple 就只有一個色調，與她本身的產品一樣。
很多讀者都知道除了 Steve Jobs，我曾與很多重要企業的負責人見過面，
所以這次會面是一次很特別的經歷。
我從 Microsoft 轉用 MAC，每天都使用 Apple 的產品，
便不難發現她簡約和有效的一面。
這個感覺加深了我對與 Steve Jobs 會面的興趣，
除了隨身帶著 Mac，我還有 iPhone，160GB iPod 及 Mac TV。
Steve Jobs 出席會議時身穿運動型的上衣和牛仔褲，
令我這個衣著並不是很正式的人挽回一點的信心，
但其實跟他會面並不容易。
Steve Jobs 是一個擁有清晰思維的人，
他會問一些比我這個投資者更深入更特別的問題，
他對 FON 的興趣令人驚訝，他希望知道每一處微細的地方，
從我們使用的軟件和韌體，
更會提及有關我們與其他企業合作 (如 BT, Neuf and Time Warner Cable) 的問題，
及我們在美國，歐洲及亞洲的發展計劃。
當本來以為需時 60 分鐘的會議，最終以 90 分鐘完成時，
Steve Jobs 表示 Apple 對 WiFi everywhere 這個概念有非常大的興趣，
他更接受我們為他準備的 La Fonera 和 La Fontenna 作為禮物。」
他會成為 Fonero 的一份子嗎?

British Telecom - BT 和 FON 合作推出 BT FON - 一個全球最大的 WiFi 社群！
BT 的三百萬名寛頻用戶被邀請加入這個社群，
而其他人若同意分享自己部份頻寛的話，
亦可成為這個社群的新成員，
與社群內的會員一起打造 WiFi 世界，
一起免費連接全球 FON 或 BT FON 熱點！
由於 BT 是英國其中一間知名的寛頻網絡供應商，
所以她對 FON 的支持足以令 BT FON 熱點達至十萬個以上。

FON in Forbes
FON 的創辦人 Martin Varsavsky 接受了 Forbes.com （註冊免費訂閱）訪問，當被問及為何當日有 FON 的構思時，他說：「創意總是來自挫折和令我感到愚蠢或不合理的事情。 各電信公司們承諾一個速度快的無線互聯網，但其實他們只提供了孤立的小島。 FON 是一個來自會員們的動力，是一間屬於大家的電信公司」。 文章亦提及 Time Warner 的行政副總裁 Peter Stern 討論 FON 的好處。

Excite Japan invests in FON
Excite Japan Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan today announced it has become a strategic investor of FON. After the press conference, the shares of Excite Japan went up 41 points from 230 to 271, before trading was halted due to Japaneses stock market regulations on daily price movements.

FON Raises US$13 Million!
We are happy to announce that FON has raised another US$13 million dollars [HK$101.4 million], for a total of around US$35 million raised since our incorporation in Feb 06. Funds were raised from a combination of current investors including Martin Varsavsky and 4 new strategic investors whose identities we will disclose soon.
Proceeds of the round will be used for R&D and growing the number of FON community members around the world. We’re already present in over 80 countries and this new funding will allow us to pursue many of the great ideas everyone has shared!

我們很高興地宣佈，FON 剛成功集資了一千三百萬美元（約一億港元），由 2006年 2月到目前為止，FON 一共集資了三千五百萬美元資金。
這些新資金是從現有及新的投資者成功集資得來的，這包括了 Martin Varsavsky 和四個新的策略投資者，他們的身份將會在不久的將來公開。

Deploying WLAN for office visitors and guests
Hong Kong is an entreprenual society, as such our economy thrives on small and medium enterprises. A lot of these organisations have minimal IT support if any and yet are huge consumers of the latest IT products and keep up with trends.
Wireless LAN (WLAN) or as its more popular name WiFi is increasing in usage in our city particularly as people start using handheld devices such as PDA's and the new generations of mobile phones with WiFi support.
A business doesn't work in isolation and one has visitors, vendors, customers and guests all coming into an office location. Whilst the office staff is generally networked very well (typically with a wired network), visitors are generally left without any access or sometimes offered access via the office WLAN.
Offering access via the office WLAN or even via a wired connection opens up the risk of having an external entity access to an office's internal network. I'll leave it to your imagination as to what could possibly go wrong here (virus infection, internal file shares visible etc).
Whilst it is always possible to deny any form of Internet access to a visitor, it is possible via a La Fonera not only to provide access but at the same time be secure.
You may rightfully ask
Won't it require the visitor/guest" to be a fonero so that he could connect to our office's FON Access Point ?
The answer is
- Use the Friends and Family mechanism available by logging in on the FON User Zone.
The Friends and Family mechanism in the FON User Zone enables a fonero to setup local users on his FON Access Point with an associated password. This username and password is specific to that FON Access Point.
Thus with this mechanism, one could allow access to the Internet to visitors/guests in an office environment and still have them separate from the office internal network. Hmm, isn't this like having your cake and eating it too ?

FON does the Salsa with Zing and Sansa
FON's fearless leader Martin Varsavsky has blogged about the team up between FON and Zing with respect to the Sansa device. Whilst I haven't played with the Sansa, here's what Martin has to say about itAfter playing with the Sansa I believe that there will be a real fight between the Sansa and the iPod. The only element in which the iPod clearly beats the Sansa is in memory. Other than that, the Sansa experience is Endgaget says 'a solid alternative to the iPod' (read all the review as Endgadget is a solid alternative to my blog).This deal is similar to the one FON has with Skype. Quoting from the press release
Under this agreement, free FON routers will be distributed with the purchase of a ZING partner device, as determined by the partner. Consumers who become Foneros, and share their WiFi connectivity with the FON network, will have unlimited access to any FON access point free of charge. Under a special program, music players with ZING may also access the FON network by purchasing a subscription for the low cost of $12/year or $1/ month. In addition to expanded access and coverage, the ZING software will be developed to provide easy connections, optimized coverage, and reception.

A warm welcome to our Japanese colleagues
Yesterday, FON founder Martin Varsavsasky was in Tokyo participating in the launch of FON in Japan. We at FON Hong Kong extend a warm welcome to Junichi Fujimoto, Nina Nikkhou and others in the FON Japan team to the worldwide FON family.
FON Japan is making the La Fonera available for 0 yen via its Japan shop till the 9th of December so readers of this blog are encouraged to tell their friends and family in Japan to avail themselves of this excellent opportunity. Japan is a popular destination for Hong Kong residents travelling there for leisure and business and similarly for Japanese residents Hong Kong is one of their top destinations for travel.
We hope that with wider availablity of FON Hotspots, residents of both countries will enjoy Internet experience in many locations in the respective countries.

Readers of our blog may be aware that from December 4-8 2006, ITU will hold its first ever ITU Telecom World event outside of Geneva, in Hong Kong. This event will bring together the world's leading Information and Communication Technologies and decision makers.

FON's promise is to give you La Fonera, without any cost!La Fonera is a WiFi router for the FON Community. La Fonera sends out two WiFi signals, one for your personal use and one is for you to share your WiFi at home with other members of the FON Community, the Foneros. This means that by sharing a little bit of your Internet connection at home, you will have access to free Internet at all of the other FON access points all over the world.
Your promise is that you activate La Fonera and share a part of your Internet connection at home with other Foneros.
In case you can't keep your promise, pass on your WiFi router La Fonera to a neighbour or a friend so that they can share a part of their Internet connection and form part of the FON Community

A Bill with a Social Agenda
Readers of this blog will know that the FON community is comprised of 3 types of people
- Linus: Those who share WiFi and in return can access WiFi at any worldwide FON Access Point
- Bill: They seek to make money from their Access Point and in return forgo the ability to roam for free Hong Kong is well know for its entrepreneurs and we hope that lots of Bills will emerge from the fledgling FON community.
- Aliens: People who do not share their wifi. They can access wifi via a FON Access Point for US$3/€3. Bills earn 50% of the revenue generated by Aliens
We @ FON Hong Kong are very pleased to hear about the innovative use of La Fonera by the SPCA. They have set up FON Hotspots in their centres and are providing wifi access to animal lovers in Hong Kong.
They have also chosen to be a Bill and are planning to utilize the revenue they receive via their FON Hotspot to support their charter for animal welfare.
We wish all success to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in this endeavor.
